Brew U is coming up!

February 24, 2013

Greetings Brewers of the East Kingdom!

There are lots of exciting things happening in the brewing world these days.  We continue to set up panels whenever possible, there are events that are focused primarily on brewing, and lots of classes happening.

Our Brew U is coming up in April.  This event will have a variety of brewing classes offered, panel opportunities, and a review of our guiding documents. Plus, I suspect, there will be a lot of lovely potables to test out.  These are all terrific reasons to plunk this event into your schedule this spring.

Speaking of reviewing our guild documents, it has been almost a year since we have placed our new handbook into action.  At BrewU I will be seaking your input as to how well the handbook is meeting our needs.  It has been extremely helpful to me to help frame the work we have accomplished in the past year.  However, like most things, when a document is new there should be a period of time test things out, a time to comment on how well it is and isn’t working, and a chance to tweak it to meet the needs of the group.  My big administrative goals are to:

1. Evaluate the tool we use to panel brewers.  (Including but not limited to: content, formatting, and the weight we give each category on the tool)  Comments prior to Brew U can be sent to me at sylviaf(at)midmaine(dot)com.  I will compile them and bring them with me to help guide our discussion.

2. Review the criteria to move from one ranking to the next. (I am bringing a proposal to Brew U to help us with the “knowledge base” portion of the requirements.)

3. Have an open discussion about the need to calibrate our scoring so we are consistent and fair.  How do we do this?  What should be done when scores from some panelists are wildly different from others?  How do we conduct panels so that brewers reap the most benefit and get the most helpful feedback that can be provided?

4. Plan for the next year.  What are our goals?  What do we want to accomplish over the next year?

I am very much looking forward to meeting you all and getting to know you better.  Please be sure you introduce yourselves to me as we cross paths this spring and summer!  Tell me your name, where you are from, and what you are working on.  I am trying to learn who you all are.  Help me out!  🙂

Sincerely,

Lady Sylvia du Vey
